The Insider’s top technology-free entertainment for kids includes the You’ve been Sentenced! word game

September 30, 2011

According to Trae Bodge of The Insider, too many kids are becoming technology “addicts” from an early age. How to steer them into more challenging channels? Trae gives great advice in her recent column:

“Are your kids already technology addicts? Or are they teetering on the cusp of gadget dependence? While fun, clever and even educational games and movies do exist, we want our kids to be entertained without relying on technology.

Many experts agree. “It’s clear from a huge body of brain research that the best amount of screen time for a child under the age of 6 is zero,” says Beth Proudfoot, the director of the Child & Family Counseling Group in California. “For children over the age of 6, a half hour or so per day of slow-paced, commercial-free and educational screen time may be okay.”

Registered nurse, licensed psychotherapist and author of The Inner Peace Diet Aileen McCabe-Maucher says that in order to promote healthy brain development and social skills, “children of all ages need to spend time playing with friends, reading, playing sports and engaging in creative or imaginative play.” So tell your child to put down the Nintendo DS and open the proverbial door to technology-free amusement.

Brain-Stimulating Games

Have games available that will get your kids thinking. Here are four of my favorites:

You’ve been Sentenced! The award-winning McNeill Designs game You’ve been Sentenced! ($24.95) is a fun, educational word activity. It can be played with the family or the kids can play it on their own. Add-on decks are available to suit your kid’s interests. Themes include sports, space, pop culture and more. It’s suggested that kids ages 6 and older play this game because they must know how to read. (Get McNeill Designs coupons)”
