Somehow, I missed National Grammar Day!

April 8, 2011

It happens. We get busy with day-to-day business of living and somehow… I forgot National Grammar Day on April 5. (As the inventor of the grammar and word game You’ve been Sentenced!, this is a pretty big slip!) Lucky for me, Carol Bainbridge from About.com Gifted Children remembered!

Here’s a brief excerpt from her post at About.com Gifted Children regarding talented and gifted kids and how to motivate them on National Grammar Day:

“This is one of my favorite days! Yeah, I’m one of those people. I love language and I love grammar. I used to diagram sentences in my spare time for fun. I used to think that was weird…okay, it probably is a bit weird…but I know I’m not alone!

Verbally gifted kids love language and while people tend to think that means an interest in literature and creative writing, it can also mean an interest in language and the way it works. And part of the way it works involves grammar, which is basically the way words are put together to make sentences.

If you have one of those verbally gifted children, you might be interested in some language games, like “You’ve Been Sentenced!” or “Smart Mouth.”

I couldn’t have said it any better!

So who is Carol Bainbridge? Carol has been a board member of the Indiana Association for the Gifted since 1999. She helps with their yearly conference and was the web administrator for their Web site (www.iag-online.org) for eight years. She is also the co-founder and president of a local parent support group, which seeks to help parents learn about and advocate for their talented and gifted children. Carol has a B.A. degree in psychology and is completing a doctoral degree in linguistics, with a focus on verbally gifted children.
