Thurston Middle School in St. Charles, Michigan uses You’ve been Sentenced! in the classroom!

September 28, 2010

Don’t you love Google alerts? I recently received a message that The Tri-County News, a Michigan news source has run the following article about the You’ve been Sentenced! game.

“YOU’VE BEEN SENTENCED — Students in Mrs. Catherine Kohagen’s eighth grade English class at Thurston Middle School in St. Charles played a game to practice their grammar skills. In “You’ve Been Sentenced,” students used the 10 word cards dealt to them to create a sentence using as many of their words as possible. Cards are five sided and include different forms of each word. Students practiced subject/verb agreement, verb tense, and other grammar skills.

Although the sentences could be silly, they had to be grammatically correct in order to count. Students acted as juries when one team member objected to the accuracy of another team member’s sentence. While playing the game, students were heard to shout out things such as “I don’t have any nouns!” and “You can’t put both those verbs in that sentence—that’s a run-on!”

To Mrs. Kohagen’s middle school class, some complimentary add-on decks are on their way to you. Enjoy!
