Contestants sought for You’ve been Sentenced! word game new TV game show

June 8, 2009

Martin Uniacke and Jennifer GrooverContestants are now being sought to participate in the TV Game Show “You’ve been Sentenced!”  A preliminary competition is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22 at Mitchell’s Toys, Trains, and Hobbies. Mitchell’s is located in the Fairfax Shopping Center on Concord Pike in Wilmington, Delaware.

All preliminary tournament contestants will receive a certificate for 6 months free online play of the word game You’ve been Sentenced!, available later this Spring. Top finishers will be eligible to compete for cash and prizes on the televised game show.

The You’ve been Sentenced! game show is a joint production of two Delaware-based firms: Positive Promotions and McNeill Designs for Brighter Minds. The show airs weekly on Channel 28.

Based on the popular word game of the same name, the television version follows the original game’s rules very closely. Using a patented word deck containing conjugations of a diverse cross-section of funny words, famous names, and familiar places, players try to build sentences in a race against time. “The game is challenging to each player’s ingenuity and ability to ‘sell’ their sentences to the Judge’s Panel,” explains game inventor Donald McNeill.

The Judge’s Panel is the one area of play that differs slightly from the original game rules. In the original card game, players are assigned roles as Jury members and vote on sentence grammar and sensibility, forcing justification of often outrageous sentences. “The addition of an independent Judge’s Panel made more sense in this context,” explains McNeill. The game show Judge’s Panel changes and contains many well-known Delawareans, as well as education and linguistic professionals. Former judges have included Beverly Stewart, director of the full-service educational facility Back to Basics Learning Dynamics, Inc.; Vincenza Carrieri-Russo, co-founder of the literacy organization Success Won’t Wait, Inc., and John Watson, journalist and radio personality.

“If you are one of those people who likes to play along with shows like Wheel of Fortune®, Jeopardy®, or Who Wants to be a Millionaire?®, we want to meet you,” says McNeill. “You’ve been Sentenced!™ doesn’t require any specialized knowledge or trivia facts, but it does require creativity, a good vocabulary, and most importantly, a quick wit.”
